Is there a trick to hooking and holding your podcast audience to increase your downloads and grow your show? Well, there might not be one magical solution, but in this blog post, I’m breaking down 5 things you can do to keep your listeners tuned in to each episode.

Know Your Podcast Audience

The best way to connect with your audience is to get to know them. Nothing is going to hook and hold a listener like speaking their lingo. When you can do that effectively and authentically, your listeners will relate to you and start to feel a genuine connection with you. This is how you create loyal fans who are listening week after week.

To get to know your audience, find out what their interests are as well as their pain points. When you’re choosing topics for your episodes, think about what your audience wants to listen to in their spare time and what they’re going through in their businesses. What are they asking you about and what do they need help with?

Create Compelling Titles and Descriptions

Titles for episodes are proving to be more and more important now that podcasting is getting into the SEO game.  Years ago I definitely saw a trend towards titles that were cute and catchy, but ultimately proved to be annoying clickbait. A misleading title is just as ineffective as a boring one. Have you ever clicked on a title that immediately felt like a trap? Did you stick around for the rest of the content or did you click away? Your listeners will do the same.

When you’re coming up with titles, ask yourself how you can pique the reader’s curiosity while making sure to include keywords and phrases that your listeners are searching for.  Apply the same thinking to your descriptions, keeping them clear and concise (with keywords!) without giving too much of the episode away so that they want to tune in to find out the rest.

Start Strong with an Engaging Introduction

The first few minutes of your episode are crucial for hooking and holding your podcast audience. With short-form content on the rise, it’s harder than ever to hold someone’s attention for long periods of time. That doesn’t mean no one is listening to full podcast episodes (quite the opposite), it just means you need to give listeners a good reason to stick around.

Introduce yourself and establish your credibility at the beginning of every episode so that new and returning listeners know who you are and why they should trust you. Explain what the episode will be about and try to tease something exciting that they won’t want to miss later in the episode.  Soundbites are great for this!

Deliver Valuable Content

You might think this goes without saying, but this is an important reminder. Your listeners want to be entertained, educated, or both. Remember, your audience is coming to you for your unique perspective and expertise. They want to know what you know! Deliver a balance of personal stories and informational content about your niche to keep your podcast audience engaged.

Share practical tips in the form of actionable advice that your listeners can implement in their lives and businesses. Invite guests onto your show to offer different perspectives and share their own unique stories. Most importantly, provide your listeners with information they can’t find anywhere else.

Consistency is Key

You can’t keep your audience hooked without showing up for them consistently. We go into more detail about consistency in podcasting in this blog post, but what you need to know for now is that consistency creates trust and credibility, leading to loyal listeners.

How can you be more consistent? Stick to a regular publishing schedule, plan ahead so that you have content ready to go when life gets busy, and engage with your audience between episodes so that they don’t forget to tune in to the next one!
